A tale of one man’s journey, kicking the habit and diving into the fog.
So we start our adventure at the end of an era.
I had just stopped smoking, for the second time after unsuccessfully attempting to use the latest in medical research Champix and failing hard after a few nights in Spain and some lovely mini Cubans. This time with determination and some sense of wonder, I was using a vaporiser, e-cig or as per the media “worse alternative” . I was going to do it.
I went on Amazon (other vendors available) and got the Kangertech SUBVOD, I got it thinking to myself it will be simpler as its just a big pen with a suck able tube on the end SIMPLES. Now this thing turned up and it was huge, a big silver long battery with a tiny nano tank on the end (take note I thought this was big at the time). So my first escapade was to see how these tank things worked, I knew about batteries anyway as I spent a while researching and also I used to build remote control cars. So I unscrewed the top and found this little silver cylinder, now this was tiny I could see down the inside and there was cotton wrapped around what I saw at the time as just a piece of metal spiralled. This is where it started; first thing I did was read the manual that came with it… Didn’t read it properly accidentally pressed the fire button and poof the cotton was now black, burnt and smelt like crap. Luckily I had bought a pack of coils (as recommended) , I swapped it out and then re-read the “do not fire dry” part of the manual. So take two I juiced it up using some high street bought liquid (at the time these where not great and had 12mg of Nicotine) plonked it all together and filled the tank leaving to stand for minutes. Now I’ve tried other people’s vapes and they made me cough but I always got the sweet taste of custards, berries etc. But this one, this subvod with cheap juice I fire fit up… And it tasted like BALLS?!! Really it tasted bloody terrible the flavour was fracking chai latte with 12mg of nicotine I didn’t touch it again for about half an hour. So now I’m two coils down one tasting like burnt toast and another like the harshest coffee in the world, but out of determination I didn’t cave I still didn’t smoke a stinky. I swapped the coil out spoke with a friend and mentioned that my juice tastes like crap, my other coils burnt what can I do? So he hooked me up with some of his premium, being a nano tank it was only 3ml so wasn’t stealing much but this time it was amazing. God damn amazing like the heavens had opened choir of Angel unicorn in the garden epic, this was when I realised that A I need to up my juice game and B I’m going to get into this hard!
So, these pre-built coils where good, but the limitations of my subvod where because it was a 20watt stick meaning that my coils couldn’t heat up to there max capacity although I had a nice vape every-time the downside was it was cold like a wet Sunday afternoon. So this made me look deeper into the vapour vaults for something a bit more powerful. My next purchase was the Kangertech again subbox 70, I figured that is used my subvod for a few weeks and it did me well and if I got another kangertech I could swap coils over from one tank to another if needed. So it turned up and this thing was cool, first mod on the market with red screen, decent internal battery and support for temp control (something I didn’t understand and still don’t properly) to go with it Also I managed to get the subtank mini like a nano but mini/Bigger. I got to it remembering my lessons from the past and built this sucker using the 0.5 coils that I used previously and this thing was awesome, I didn’t even try putting my nano tank on there as it looked odd with a 24mm base space vs 22mm nano. So the mini tank used the same coils as the nano but man did it pack a punch now, I was only taking it up to 35/40w as recommended but all my juices where more defined because of the extra volts I could squeeze through this sucker, now I didn’t realise that it was a coil heating this up I thought it was just a magic box that did stuff. I kept Vaping this for weeks throwing different juices into it trying it in different watts and I ended up buying some of the nickle coils that showed 0.15ohms in TC mode 🙂 happy boy right here. I waited for them to turn up set them in the tank and read my manual again, flicking through “do not fire dry, do not charge in car” etc and I found the small section on temp control coils. Now nickle is a scary material because the reason you can’t just throw it in and burn away is because although with lower resistance comes great responsibility it also can give off some nasty gases or so I was told via many forums and sites. So I went ahead and followed the appropriate actions set it all up so I wouldn’t get dry hits etc etc and then I started using it. I don’t know if I set it up badly or I just sucked at this but it suddenly made the tank go into “nervous pedestrian” mode. It was firing up and spitting out tiny volts to make sure I didn’t get a dry hit, now they scoots where crazy low meaning like the subvod the coils couldn’t heat up and the juice tasted like cold water. I gave these little coils a day or two to impress but it never happened, also my battery was getting drained by it trying to figure out what to do every time I fired up, so for now they’re back in there packets sat in my tool chest with any other rejected ventures and I switched back to the standard SSOC 0.5ohm coils which again I turned them on and started flipping out about how awesome my clouds where how great they tasted and so on.
My next adventure as I went deeper into the rabbit hole following Alice and the centipede to a foggy kingdom was due to not so much boredom as the Subtank did me well as a daily vape, but more want as I was watching all these clouds getting thrown up every where and people screaming about flavour.
I went on a information spree as I started watching reviews and reading people’s opinions of the new stuff on the market. I started to stumble upon tanks that either had amazing prebuilt 2+ coils and some with a rebuildable deck in the bottom of the tank, prebuilt multi coils sounded cool the rebuildable part sounded great but a little challenging. *+1 life point if you can guess the tank I’m on about?
Yeah you guys guessed it, the SMOK TRV4 was on its way, with all the reviews and also all the features it included I could just imagine the fun I could have with it. When it came I was like a kid a Christmas watching for a reflective jacket wearing Santa with a. Bright red Royal Mail sack, it came along in this wonderful almost watch like box. I cracked the box open and there she was, the SMOK, already it had the big ass triple coil installed and it was a thing of shear beauty. Top view looking down it looked mental big ass bore of steel coils with so much cotton I could just imagine the amazing flavours I would get out of this thing, also in the box was the quad coil pre built which looks like your standard kangertech coils but twice the length and like looking into a well and the RTA deck which I looked at for five seconds got scared put it back in the box and left alone. So first few days I used the triple, I tried it as a daily but I learnt really quick that this sucked juice like a hummer, 3.5ml tank (don’t quote me) and it would be gone in my me sitting no matter what juice poof gone, no matter what wattage.. Poof gone and it was getting pricey. I switched it out for the quad for a day but has the same issue where yes my clouds where impressive yes the flavour was great but unless I carried a 60ml bottle and had an endless stream of cash I wasn’t going to keep this up for long. This is wear I wondered, if I use this deck that I build myself using as much cotton as I want or as little would it use less juice… The answer my friends is yes A lot less. I started With the prebuilt coil it comes with, think it’s a 0.5 6wrap and it was awesome learning how to set the wire up, how to make sure it burns okay it was so much fun just setting it up and learning how to wick it I built it several times, and spare coils for when I might need them. Once all set up this thing ran like a dream, it wicked great everytime well a few dry hits but it was my first time. The juice was flowing the flavour was bombastic
I had dropped down to 3mg Nic by now as well so I could really taste every inch of these amazing flavours on the market and tbh most of them where flavours that I ever imagined wanting to smoke. This lead me to get another tank as part of a mystery box which was cool the Cthulhu V2, this thing was really awesome had a deck that could be pulled out of the tank without refilling, RDTA deck but no pre made coils and a funky airflow section. Sounds good and to be honest everyone loved it… but me I just couldn’t get it to wick properly had shorts a lot of the time with different builds etc eventually I kind of gave up after the 510 pin broke :/ . I then went onto get a Monster V3 RDTA which was the simpler version of the rebuildable tank range just tank, deck, chimney and airflow… but I accidentally bought a clone and the 510 pin died. So I then went back to the SMOK which just worked really well, it still gobbled juice so I jumped between that and my Sub tank.
This was awesome but something was still missing as it leaked a bit here and there and was also a bit battery hungry as it could run at 50 well and tasted better for it, this hunger that started eating at me was screaming “More power” and took me to where I am now… The valley of the kings, the hall of the gods, The sub ohm self-built RDAs and a big ass dual 18650 mod.
Join me next time on this never ending story of how I got into Vaping, how I am learning as I go and also other crap that might be funny.
