The contents of your e-liquid and what you choose to vape is quickly becoming a large and contentious conversation topic, with many of those who vape starting to sound suspiciously like wannabe wine connoisseurs. Having a good grasp of your e-liquid and its contents doesn’t have to be a topic left to the experts though – and the road to becoming a truly knowledgeable vaper is one being taken up by more and more vaping ‘newbies’ every day. Long gone are the days when you had to rock out with a heavy, clunky and sometimes dangerous mod in order to know what you are talking about when it comes to vaping. Vaping is no longer just a way some people get their nicotine fix (although it is still an important clutch that many former smokers rely on) – these days the culture of vaping has so much to it, with people flocking in the millions to embrace it and the lifestyle choice that it reflects. It has become common knowledge by now that e-liquids come in literally thousands of different combinations – anything from a traditional tobacco or menthol flavours to some awesome ‘out there’ flavours like chocolate or exotic fruits (depending on your specific preferences and what your equipment is able to properly vape). Saying all this though, knowing in depth the ingredients that make your e-liquid taste the way it does is a whole different kettle of fish, and getting the balance right with your favourite flavours is an altogether more complicated (but very interesting!) subject. At first glance, the science behind the whole process may seem like a lot to process. A couple of the ingredients used in the manufacturing of e-liquid have very scientific names, but in truth they are widely used substances that are found in plenty of foods, medicines and other widely used products that most people are aware of and consume on a regular basis. To sum it all up in a simple way before we take a closer look, e-liquid is composed of four things:
That’s pretty simple, right? Perhaps looking at the ‘PG’ & ‘VG’ aspects a bit closer is warranted, but the contents are all considered safe for consumption by an overwhelming majority of medical professionals.
- Propylene glycol, commonly referred to as ‘PG’ for short, is used in the processing of food, and its primary role in your e-liquid is to carry the flavourings that give your e-juice the taste that it has. It’s also commonly used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical sector for oral medications too, its consumption is widely regarded as totally harmless.
- Vegetable glycerine, or ‘VG’ as it is often referred to, is a vegetable oil extract that is produced industrially. It’s also used as a sweetener, as it has a sweet taste and less calories than refined sugar.
A large percentage of E-liquids also contains nicotine (available in various strengths depending on your requirements as an ex-smoker), although nicotine-free varieties are becoming more wide spread as vapers look to break the relationship off completely (by gradually weaning themselves off) or (on the very rare occasion) someone who has never smoked is interested in experiencing some of the amazing flavours that are out there without the risk of becoming physically addicted to it. The final ingredient is the flavouring that the manufacturer of the e-liquid is using to give their product a distinct taste. It is generally these four components that make up the bulk of an e-liquid’s components. Getting to know these well is the key to understanding exactly what you are ‘vaporising’ and putting in your body. It is worth noting that the NHS has come out and said that vaping is 95% safer than smoking a traditional cigarette.
Depending on your distinct tastes and preferences, our online e-cig shop gives you the option to filter e-liquids by flavour, nicotine strength and brands that you may already trust (we have an awesome community who leave cool reviews on products if you are still unsure of what to go for). Top Tips on looking after your e-liquid. Taking good care of your e-liquid is something that some of the more advanced vapers take into account, but something you should never neglect. If you are looking to ensure a consistent and awesome vape across your selection of e-liquids, then we hope this guide serves you well. Firstly, storage is a massively important factor. Keep all your e-liquids at room temperature and ensure they stay out of direct sunlight. If your liquid is exposed to extreme heat or cold can cause the taste of your e-liquid to alter from the original state. “Steeping” your e-liquid takes a lot of patience, but many vapers out there consider the process worth the wait. To steep your e-juice, remove the lid from the container, and allow it to rest in a relatively cool, dark and dry location for anything from a few days to a couple of weeks. Shake your e-liquid bottle. Some e-liquids require shaking more than others, more often dependant on how long it was in storage and how ‘fresh’ the batch is. It’s always advisable to give the container your e-liquid is in a good shake – as sometime the heavier flavouring will sink to the bottom if left standing for a while. Trial and error is a massive part of finding your ideal taste when it comes to e-liquid. If you have tried steeping your e-liquid for around three days and not noticed a massive difference, try leaving it to sit for a week the next time and see if you notice any difference in the flavour and smoothness of your vape. Some vapers have noted a change in flavour after keeping their e-liquid in warm water for a period (roughly two hours). A good piece of advice is to look at what works for other people who have worked things out for themselves – aas well as if you are using an advanced kit or an e-cig starter kit. More often than not, the best way to learn is by talking to other vapers about their experiences. Forums are a good place to start, and you can make some good friends while engaging with the community too! Hopefully before long you will have a vape cabinet next to your drinks cabinet, possibly finding yourself organising a social gathering for the purpose of discussing the latest e-juice blends. We wish you luck and hope you enjoy vaping as much as we do at Vapor Store.
