How Do E-Cigs Work?
E-cigarettes have taken the world by storm. Millions of people across the globe have taken to it as a means to quit smoking, with a large percentage of users now considering it a hobby too. Invented by Hon Lik, the electronic cigarette is one of the marvels of current technology – both in how it works and the improvement in the quality of life that many of its users claim to have. By allowing the user to get their nicotine ‘fix’ in a way that is very similar to a cigarette, e-cigarettes combine form and function which allows former smokers to continue to receive their nicotine (a mostly harmless chemical) intake with other compounds that aren’t as potentially dangerous as those found in cigarettes. Added to this, there is also the elimination of the horrible smell, clothes staining ash, bad breath, and the public distaste for cigarettes.
Any e-cigarette can be characterized by being made up of 3 main components; namely a battery, a tank, and an atomizer.
The battery powers the atomizer. Depending on the type of e-cigarette and liquid you have, you may want to do careful research in to the type of battery that you decide to use. Please also consider battery safety as one of your highest priorities if you are looking to use an e-cigarette. You can buy batteries here.
The tank, which holds the e-liquid (read more on that below). Normally tanks are made from glass, steel or industrial grade Perspex to ensure that there is no corrosion or leaks when filled. A majority of tanks will also have a drip tip or mouth piece attached to it, which you will inhale the vapour through.
The atomizer. The atomizer will generally contain a piece of cotton wrapped in a coil. When the cotton is soaked with the e-liquid, and a current flows through the coil, the e-liquid is heated to the point of vaporization.
E-liquid, e-juice, or vape juice is the liquid put in to the vaporizer’s tank that gets heated and inhaled. Depending on your personal preferences, E-liquids may come in a wide variety of flavours, from a traditional tobacco to flavours reminiscent of your favourite sweets, soft drinks or snacks. The e-liquid may also contain the nicotine to deliver the ‘hit’ for people who are using it as a smoking cessation product. Most e-liquid is available with a range of nicotine levels, a convenience which allows people switching to e-cigarettes from smoking to maintain, reduce, or eliminate their usual nicotine intake.
